Top Ten Fat Loss Tips from James
These tips will help you increase your fat burning efforts and turn your body into a fat-burning machine. Use them and get the body you want and keep it for good.
Drink Plenty of Water
Drinking water keeps you from retaining water. The principle is similar to starvation mode for food. Drinking water also mobilizes fat stores making it easier to lose fat with exercise. Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration. Dehydration can slow the metabolism. Do not use thirst to determine when to drink water. Drink even when you are not thirsty.
You should drink 1 liter or 1 quart of water for every 50 pounds of body weight. For a 100-pound person, that means 2 liters of water per day. Try drinking 16 ounces every two hours.
Do Cardio
Cardiovascular exercise is very effective at burning fat. 30 – 40 minutes of cardio 5 or more days per week will help you create a calorie deficit. The first 15 to 18 minutes are using primarily glycogen (stored sugar) in your system as energy. After that, you will start using your fat stores. You should not be completely out of breath but you should have slight difficulty carrying on a conversation.
Lift Weights
Weight-bearing exercise has many benefits. One is increased lean body mass. Building muscle is the best way to increase your fat-burning potential even when you are not exercising. Another benefit is preventing osteoporosis. Resistance training increases bone mass density.
Eat frequent meals
Eating every 2 - 3 hours will make your body efficient at burning fat. Eating frequently releases enzymes that signal the body to release stored fat as energy. This is a good thing. Not eating frequently makes your body efficient at storing fat. This is a bad thing.
Eat protein
Protein is the building block of muscle. I have already discussed the benefits of increased muscle-mass but how much protein do you need? The average person needs .8 grams of complete protein per kilogram of bodyweight to maintain adequate health. If you are building muscle or trying to lose weight, you will need more. To build muscle, you may need anywhere from 1 gram to 1.5 grams per pound of bodyweight. This is mainly for bodybuilders or strength athletes. Endurance athletes will need less. General performance may call for 1.2 to 1.8 grams per kilogram of bodyweight. I kilogram equals 2.2 pounds.
Eat whole food
Eating whole food (not just protein shakes) will raise your metabolism because your body will use energy to break down the food. Protein shakes will not raise your metabolism as much. Generally speaking, no more than 2 of your 6 meals per day should be shakes.
Eat your starchy carbs early in the day.
Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred energy source. However, excess carbs are stored as fat. Eat your starchy carbs early in the day so that you are sure to burn them off. Later in the day, eat fibrous carbs which are more of your vegetables.
Don’t eat 2 – 3 hours before going to bed
By not eating 2 – 3 hours before bed, you are ensuring that you will not store calories as fat. When you wake up the next morning, your glycogen stores will be depleted and you will be ready for a good breakfast.
Be patient
You didn’t gain the fat in one day. Don’t expect to lose it that fast either. Safe weight loss that will last is your goal. This means roughly 2 pounds a week. This may not sound like much but remember, most of that will be fat.
Enjoy life
Stress triggers a lot of bad processes in the body. That’s why it is called the “Silent Killer”. For some, it means more eating at the wrong time or too much. For some, it means depression and not feeling like working out. Don’t let stress hamstring your health and fitness goals. Minimize stress and enjoy life! |
